Place-Based Education
Education is all around you. You don’t just learn ABOUT the world – you learn IN IT.
What is Place-Based Education?
"Place-based education is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and other concepts across the curriculum." ~ Center for Place-Based Education
Why Place-Based Education?
We believe that students' learning experiences are more powerful when they can connect curricular content to the local context and lived experiences. Place-Based Education allows students to explore the rich history and culture of their local communities and the region. This approach to learning encourages authentic partnerships with local community members, businesses, and organizations. Students and the adults they collaborate with, will appreciate a deeper sense of belonging, the chance to actively engage through project-based learning and place-based education in solving complex challenges impacting the community in real-time, and a sense of agency and contribution to the health and vitality of the community. We don't believe that students should have to wait until they graduate high school to become involved citizens.
